The method involves the automatic labelling of cartons (14,16) of different heights, being transported one behind the other on a conveying belt (12). The height of the approaching object is recorded at a height measurement point (28) in front of the labelling point. At the labelling point, a transfer mechanism (26) transfers a self adhesive label (22) from a dispensing mechanism (20) onto the object in an advance movement at preset clearance above the recorded height. As the object passes through the labelling point, the label is transferred to the object by a pressing cylinder.
