An optical waveguide component G3 comprises a main waveguide 3a through which signal light and regenerating light propagate, a branch waveguide 3b, a filter element 5 for reflecting the regenerating light to the branch waveguide 3b, and a plurality of reflecting elements R1 - R8, each having two reflecting surfaces S1, S2. One reflecting surface S1 reflects the regenerating light back to the filter element 5 and along the main waveguide 3a, whilst the other surface S2 reflects the regenerating light in a direction which deviates from the light axis of the branch waveguide 3b. The elements R1 - R8 may also or alternatively be spaced from one another at different intervals. The reflected regenerating light may be processed to identify the arrangement of the reflecting elements R1 - R8, and so to identify that the path to that element is not faulty. <IMAGE>
