A method and apparatus for selective high-speed insertion of sheets (30) from a plurality of webs (28) into envelopes (26) providing a mechanism for folding and inserting (22) sheets into preformed envelopes (26). Preformed envelopes are provided (32) for folding and inserting (22) from a source that may be a roll (24). A plurality of sheets (30) are fed (48) for folding and inserting into envelopes. A leading sheet (38) from each of the webs (28) is selectively driven (48) (56) (54) and cut (42) at a collection point for folding and inserting. The selecting of sheets for folding and cutting may be accomplished by means of a CPU (54) that may include a bar code detection system (56) disposed along each of the webs. A system for widening of envelopes to facilitate insertion of contents may also be included. This system may comprise a strip along each of the envelopes in a stream that includes a folded section within each opening or may comprise tabs disposed along an opening side of each envelope. <IMAGE> |
