PURPOSE: To provide a device for inflating an inflatable vehicle occupant restraint, wherein the inflator of an air bag is controlled in response to the position of a vehicle occupant to be restrained by the air bag and an ambient temperature. CONSTITUTION: The inflating device 10 of an inflatable vehicle occupant restraint 12 is provided with a collision sensor 52 and an inflator assembly 20. The collision sensor 52 provides a collision signal indicating the occurrence of vehicle collision. The inflator assembly 20 is provided with a first inflation fluid source 22, which provides a first volume of inflation fluid when actuated. The inflator assembly 20 is further provided with a second inflation fluid source 24, which provides a second volume of inflation fluid different from the first when actuated. A position sensor 70 provides a position signal indicating the position of the vehicle occupant. A controller 50 actuates the first or second inflation fluid sources 22 and 24 in an optional one of a plurality of different operation modes in response to the collision signal and the position signal.
