A light-disseminating fibre fleece (4) is installed parallel between the two panes (2) so as to fill out their free space sufficiently to prevent the convection of any gas from between the two panes. Argon or krypton are preferred gases, and one or both panes have an IR-impermeable coating, using several panes and fleece layers as required. The fleece helps to reduce the heat transfer coefficient and comes without added weight penalty. The system includes conventional gas seals at the edges, and the fleece can be held taut by spacers between the several window panes. Thus when using IR-proof coated panes and krypton gas, the heat transfer coefficient amounts to 0.7w/m2.K with unit depth or width of 25 mm. The system is suitable for industrial shops, overhead lighting or shed-roof applications.
