Double piston four=stroke IC engine

The four-stroke engine uses two pistons reciprocating on a slightly different timing. Air or a fuel-air mixture is sucked in through an inlet valve by a first piston (1) and then compressed. The charge is forced through an overflow channel (7) to a second piston (2), which is in advance of the first piston by a phase angle of 0 deg. to less than 90 deg. Closure of the overflow channel takes place at the end of compression such that the second piston, once ignition or injection has taken place, carries out the working stroke and the exhaust stroke.
