The invention relates to a hydraulic vibration damper for motor vehicles with a damping cylinder (1) containing damping fluid, a sealed piston rod (2) arranged axially displaceable and immersing therein, and a damping piston (3) fixed to the piston rod, which piston divides the damping cylinder into two working chambers (13, 14), the damping cylinder (1) and the piston rod (2) each having a fixing device (4, 18) for connection to the unsprung mass or the sprung mass. According to the invention the fixing device (4), connectable to the unsprung mass, is guided axially movable in the small amplitude road excitation range, connected to the damper cylinder (1) or the piston rod (2) and, between the fixing device (4) and the damper cylinder (1) or the piston rod (2), at least one spring (5) or (8) is provided, which is supported either on the damper cylinder (1) or the piston rod (2) respectively and on the fixing device (4). The advantage of the invention resides in the fact that with high-frequency road excitations the vibration damper is decoupled from the unsprung mass. The vibration damper according to the invention thereby improves the ride comfort, especially where high pressure tyres are used.
