The transmission has wheel speed monitors on all the wheels as well as monitors for the steering setting. The processor control determines wheel slip signals w.r.t. the road speed and the steering setting. These signals are compared with reference values to activate the differential lock actuator (20) when necessary. The rate at which the differential lock is applied is determined by the dynamics of the vehicle ie. through integration of the control signals. The time delay in applying the differential lock and removing same is determined by the dynamics, in relation to programmed reference values. The motor torque is reduced when necessary to maintain stability.
