This metal gasket comprises a pair of bead plates (1, 2) on which beads(3, 4) are formed so as to extend along the circumferences of combustion chamber holes (25), and an intermediate plate(10) interposed between the bead plates(1, 2). The intermediate plate(10) is provided on the parts thereof which are closer to the combustion chamber holes(25) than to the beads(3, 4) on the bead plates(1) with stopper portions comprising stepped portions(13, 14). These stopper portions constitute compensation portions(15, 16) for the beads (3, 4) on the bead plates(1). The compensation portions (15, 16) prevent a total compression of the beads(3, 4) on the bead plates(1, 2) when the metal gasket is tightened, offset the irregularity of opposed surfaces of a cylinder head and a cylinder block, improve the sealability with respect to the beads(3, 4), and protect the beads against corrosion and compression. $$
