The roll (2) is esp. for paper and is supported at the underside to counteract sagging. A cushion of compressed air is generated between the support (5,6) and the roll. The support comprises one or more plates, whose surface largely matches the contour of the underside of the roll. The plate contains one or more compressed-air outlets (7), and the air can escape between it and the roll. The plate adjusts automatically in the radial direction of the roll dependent on the diameter of the latter, to match its contour. The plate can bend elastically under the action of an adjusting motor (6) with a hinge joint (8) to one of its lengthwise edges.
