PURPOSE:To embody a high speed retrieval by converting time code information into detection sector information while reproducing time code information recorded on a tape. CONSTITUTION:The retrieval instructing information of a host controller are inputted from a retrieval instruction input terminal 32 to be transmitted to a selector coincidence detecting circuit 19. Present tape positional information are decoded to time information in an address reproducing circuit 24 via a switch 29 by reproducing time codes on a tape 21 with a TCG head 11. At this time, the circuit 29 is changed over according to the selection signal of a recording or a reproducing coming from a selection signal input terminal 28. The time information decoded in the circuit 24 are converted into sector information in an address/sector converter circuit 20. A time code signal converted into sector information is transmitted to the circuit 19 via a switch 18. In the circuit 19, the coincidence between the retrieval instructing sector information and the detection sector information is detected and then a stoppage signal is transmitted to a reel driving circuit 15.
