PURPOSE:To obtain a new bacterial strain of the genus Rhodococcus capable of decomposing and eliminating ethylene cyanohydrin and taking the ammoniacal nitrogen produced by the decomposition of ethylene cyanohydrin into the cell and effective for lowering the ammoniacal nitrogen content in waste water. CONSTITUTION:This new Rhodococcus rhodochrous EC12 (FERM P-14397) is produced from collected soil samples by the accumulation culture using ethylene cyanohydrin as the sole carbon source and nitrogen source and screening the cultured product. The microbial strain is a bacillus having a size of (0. 5-0.8mum)X(1.0-5.0mum) and capable of decomposing and eliminating ethylene cyanohydrin and taking the ammoniacal nitrogen produced by the decomposition of ethylene cyanohydrin into the cell as cell components such as protein and nucleic acid. It has positive Gram-staining property and obligatory aerobic oxygen requirement and is effective for decreasing the ammoniacal nitrogen content of waste water.
