Process for the preparation of nitro-substituted arylamides and arylamines

Prepn. of nitro-substd. arylamines and arylamides of formula (Ia) and (Ib) comprises reacting a nitro-substd. aromatic cpd. of formula Ar(Xn)(NO2) (II) with an amide of formula R<10>R<2>NH (IIIa) or of formula R(CONHR<2>)2 (IIIb) in the presence of a base and oxygen in a polar solvent and opt hydrolysing the amide obtd. to the corresp amine. Ar = mono- or polycyclic 4-16C aromatic gp opt contg 1 or 2 N, O and/or S atoms; R = e.g. 1-8C alkylene; R<1> = e.g. H; R<10> = R<1> except H; R<2> = e.g. H; X = e.g. halo; n = 1-3.
