PURPOSE:To detect an abnormality by detecting the micro level variation, close to the background level, in the radiation from an object. CONSTITUTION:Under a condition where the radiation level of a plant is normal, the detection signal from a radiation detector is subjected to A/D conversion. The extent of distortion in the waveform of output Yi(data train of Y1, Y2, Y3,...) is operated through an operating unit 17 and an extent of distortion is set in a setter 18. Radiation from an object is detected when the radiation level thereof is detected and the extent of distortion of the detection signal is operated by the operating unit 17. The operation result is compared with a set value by means of a comparator 19. When the operated extent of distortion is higher than the set value by a factor of 3 or more, for example, a decision is made that the radiation level is abnormal and the fact is notified through an alarm 20.
