The use of a cerebral NO-synthetase inhibitor (I) is claimed for preparing a medicament for reducing alcohol consumption or preventing excessive alcohol consumption in patients with an alcohol dependence syndrome. Also claimed is a compsn. for reducing or preventing alcohol consumption, contg. (I) as active agent in a dose such that the daily intake of fluids and nutrients is not significantly reduced.
