The filling, designed to break the fall of sportsmen/women taking part in athletic or gymnastic events, consists of supporting blocks (1) in the bottom of the pit, a panel (2) of a rigid or semi-rigid material to cover the blocks, and two mattresses (3,4) of different densities, made from a supple and deformable material and with dimensions similar to those of the pit. The upper mattress (4) has a density which is less than that of the lower mattress (3), and it can be contained in a protective cover. The mattresses can be made, for example, from a material such as Bultex (RTM), and the blocks (1) of a deformable material such as polyurethane foam. The different components of the filling can be treated to make then fire-resistant.
