PURPOSE:To secure preferable driving feeling by judging a downhill road based on the gentle threshold, and executing the shift down control to correctly reflecting the request for the deceleration of a driver when the condition where the accelerator pedal is stepped on is released and the brake is applied within the prescribed period of time. CONSTITUTION:An automatic transmission 2 switches the transmission characteristic by judging whether or not the vehicle is traveling on the downhill road in a computer 84 to input the output signals from a throttle sensor 80, a vehicle speed sensor 82, a foot brake switch 88, etc. Two kinds of thresholds of the road surface gradient for judging the downhill road are prepared, and a judgement is made that the road is the downhill with the first road surface gradient as the threshold, and when the accelerator is released and the foot brake operation is detected, the shift down is executed to the lower step. On the other hand, when a judgement is made that the road is the downhill with the second road surface gradient (<the first road surface gradient) as the threshold, and only when the accelerator is released and the brake operation is made within the prescribed period of time, the shift down is executed. |
