Preparation of 5 and 6 carbon atom polyols from the corresponding aliphatic aldehydes by reaction with formaldehyde and alkali hydroxide performed in two or more stages in which the synthesis takes place in a spatial and temporal sequence taking care to control the optimum reaction conditions at each stage.
