PURPOSE:To avoid the reduction in the resolution attended with the movement of a sampling position and to prevent a read time from being increased by discharging a signal charge stored in a photoelectric conversion section externally till the movement of the sampling position is finished. CONSTITUTION:An opening 101 of a light receiving section of a CCD is moved to positions a to d and an image is read at each position. Thus, a unit picture element 103 is formed by the image from four sampling positions. One pattern of the image is made up of four frames a to d. While the opening 101 of the light receiving section of the CCD is moved to positions a to the signal charge stored in moving period is swept out at the end of each movement. The sweep- out of the signal charge may be finished till the movement of the opening 101 of the light receiving section is finished at least. Thus, as soon as the opening 101 of the light receiving section is moved, the signal charge may be swept out. Through the discharge, the deterioration in the resolution attended with the movement of sampling positions is avoided.
