Monitoring system for leak detection via characteristic impedance

A monitoring system for locating the position of leakage in a fluid conduit (c) measures the characteristic impedance between a pair of conductors (b, d) running through the thermal insulation (e) surrounding the conduit e.g. a steampipe. A transmitter (6) supplies successive pulses for transmission along the pipelength via the impedance matching connector (2) and the resulting reflected voltage signals from the distance/time related sections of pipe ave A/D converted and temporarily stored in a number of corresponding RAM subsections in an evaluation unit (8) containing comparative data norms. A time multiplex scanner enables cyclic comparison of each pipe section against the corresponding norm when leakages are revealed by significant voltage fall.
