Optical transmission carrier for rack-mounted electronic boards

An electronic system has slide-in circuit board modules (1) that locate within a housing and communicate with back plane units (4). Communication between the boards is made using opto electrical signal paths. Each board has a sub-module (6) mounted on it and this is aligned by dowels with a specific main board position. The signal transmission system has a wired connection from the main board to a laser diode and collimator (2) that directs a beam across a gap to be received by a coupling element on the back plane. The back plane is in the form of a sheet of ground and polished glass that reflects the signals internally.
