The recording medium (52) provides tracks for the information read or written by the head (55). A drive unit (53) rotates the disc. The head has a recording element and a reproducing element, arranged along a track at a set distance apart. A drive control unit (61) swivels the head into a certain radial position in order to "format" the disc. A servo signal is read from the disc and conveyed to a servo-demodulation circuit (57) via a head integrated circuit (56). The demodulation circuit provides a position signal providing position information via an a-d converter (58).
