Prepn. of PVC-free and plasticiser-free coatings for wall and floor coverings

Floor- and wall-coverings on structured plastics foam which contain no PVC or plasticiser are new. The coatings consist of an ionomer which contains 98-85% ethylene or propylene and 2-15% of acrylic or methacrylic acid, and which is 5-60% neutralised with lithium, sodium, potassium, zinc, magnesium or calcium. Also claimed is prepn. of the coatings. Pref. the ionomer contains 5-10% methacrylic acid and is 10-30% neutralised with sodium or zinc ions. The ionomer has a melt flow index of 15-25. A known, foamable plasticiser-free mixture consists of a plastics, pref. polyethylene, EVA or polypropylene, a foaming agent, filler and other additives. It is calendered or extruded at below the foaming temp., or may be coated as powder onto a carrier, and melted to give a smooth layer. It is printed with a foam melted to give a smooth layer. It is printed with a foam inhibitor. The ionomer is coated as a powder (2) and then melted (3) and treated (4) to form a smooth surface. The material is then heated to cause foaming (5). The ionomer powder contains fillers, pigments, antistats, lubricants, bactericides, light stabilisers and other additives.
