The process comprises lowering the freezing temperature from its initial value down to -40 degree C for the time required for the sample to assume a temperature of between -5 degree and -7 degree C; continuing to lower the temperature down to -60 degree /-110 degree C more suddenly and then increasing it until the sample reaches -15 degree C, after which the temperature is lowered much more slowly down to -120 degree C approximately. For thawing, the bag containing the homograft is placed in physiological saline at 40 degree C and then the bags are opened and the contents are also poured over saline at 40 degree C, agitating very gently until the ice totally melts. Significant applications in medicine, especially in the field of organ transplantation.
