In a colour transformation process for transforming input-side reference stimuli (R, G, B) into picture-side reference stimuli (R", G", B") with a greater range of colour stimulus specifications than is given by the input-side reference stimuli (R, G, B), colour transformation is carried out in the following steps: conversion of the components of a colour vector of the input-side reference stimuli to give notional reference stimuli (R', G', B'), thereby altering the colour stimulus specification of the colour vector; and transformation of the converted components of the colour vector of the notional reference stimuli (R', G', B') into the picture-side reference stimuli (R", G", B") to produce picture-side components of the colour vector, the picture-side reference stimuli thus produced having the same colour tone and saturation as the colour stimulus specification produced by conversion in the notional reference stimulus system (R', G', B'). A colour video system for carrying out the process in question has a circuit (15) for converting the signals to the notional reference stimulus system (R', G', B'), and a matrix switch (14) for transforming the notional reference stimulus system into the picture-side reference stimulus system (R", G", B").
