<p>Autoimmune diseases such as graft versus host disease, are associated with the development of an autoimmune response, such as autoantibodies raised against a host protein carried by an infecting microorganism. The invention provides methods of combatting autoimmune diseases by preventing the organism from infecting the host, by vaccination, by preventing the antibodies from effecting tissue damage, and by preventing the organisms from initiating an immune response in the host. The invention includes modified microorganisms which either lack the host protein or in which the host protein is non-immunogenic.</p> |
