The beam of energy (104) is provided along an axis (113). The directing mechanism (106) includes a frame (122) that is mounted to the energy source. A first focusing mechanism (146) is provided to focus the beam of energy (104) to the focal point (107) that is along the axis (113). The first focusing mechanism (146) is mounted to the frame (122) between the energy source and the focal point (107). A first reflective mirror (156) is slidably mounted to the frame (122) between the energy source and the first focusing mechanism (146). The slidable mounting of the first reflective mirror (156) allows the first reflective mirror (156) to be moved into the path of the beam of energy (104) and thereby cause a first reflected beam portion (164, 166) to be formed. A second reflective mirror (170) is also mounted to the frame (122). The second reflective mirror (170) is positioned to reflect the first reflected beam portion (164, 166) and thereby form a second reflected beam portion (172, 174). A second focusing mechanism (176) for focusing the second reflected beam portion (172, 174) to the focal point (107) is mounted to the frame (122) between the second reflective mirror (170) and the focal point (107).
