Saw blade comprising sets of 4 to 6 teeth, the number depending on the blade length, at least every fourth, fifth or sixth tooth being less high than the other teeth, by 6 to 8 tenths of a millimeter. The method for the manufacture of a band saw blade with one or two cutting sides comprises the steps of forming a band with side clearances on the faces of the side corresponding to the cutting surface; forming on the cutting edge constant pitch toothed profiles of the same height: compressing the tip of each tooth to form the saw kerf, sharpening each tooth; surface grinding the profile of the rear and tip of at least one tooth in n teeth to lower its height in relation to the other teeth by a defined value. A sharpening machine for carrying out said method includes, on the cam mechanism for forming the toothed profile, a releasable device for selectively lowering the grinding wheel over a greater distance to lower the rear and tip profile of the selected tooth when the mechanism is operated. The machine comprises means for counting the number of teeth and for automatically selecting and operating the lowering mechanism.
