Cooling assembly (10) for use in a cryopreservation cooler, comprises: a plurality of individual sample holders (12), each sample holder (12) being capable of accepting a sample receptacle (13) containing a sample to be preserved; and sample holder retaining means (14, 16) for retaining the sample holders (12) in a spaced-apart relationship, such that a coolant fluid may pass between the sample holders (12).
