Fluorine-contg. copolymers for oil- and water-proofing paper

Oil- and water-repellent paper is treated on the surface with 0.1-2.0 wt.% or in the bulk (pulp) with 0.5-2.0 wt.% fluorine-contg. copolymers (A), opt. using unsoftened tap water and opt. with starch and retention aids. (A) are copolymers of (a) 60-90 wt.% perfluoroalkyl acrylates of formula CH2=CH-COO-CH2-CH2-CnF2n+1 (I), (b) 1-35 wt.% monomers of formula CH2=CR<1>-COO-R<2> (II), (c) 3-20 wt.% monomers of formula CH2=CR<3>-COO-(CH2CH2O)m-R<4> (III), and (d) 1-20 wt.% monomers of formula CH2=CHR<5>COO-CH2CH2-NR<6>R<7> (IVa) or their salts CH2=CHR<5>COOCH2CH2NR<6>R<7>R<8><+>Y<-> (IVb) or N-oxides CH2=CR<5>COOCH2CH2N(O)R<6>R<7> (IVc). n = 4-20, pref. 6-16; m = 3-20; R<1>, R<3> and R<5> are each H or Me; R<2>, R<6>, R<7> and R<8> are each a 1-4C alkyl; and R<4> is H or a 1-8C alkyl. The treatment compsns. described in US 5247008 are not claimed. Also claimed is a process for prodn. of oil- and waterproof paper by treatment with (A) as above.
