Ends of plastics foils are joined together by clamping the ends with jaws, and placing an anvil of a platen to cut the ends. On removal of the severed strips and the anvil, the ends are lowered onto the platen on which the ends are overlapped, the overlapping region being thermowelded using a heated die which is pressed against the platen. Used for continuous mfr. of stretched tapes from foils.
