The reel consists of two circular side panels (4) located on either side of a drum (6) and having edges (5) which are covered by a wrapper formed from a strip of a thermoplastic material (1) with one smooth surface and the other having transverse grooves. The strip is fitted with its smooth side facing the drum and is attached to the edges of the side panels e.g. with nails or staples. The thermoplastic wrapper is, for example, 1 cm thick, with grooves 2 cm wide and 6 mm deep, spaced at 8 cm intervals. It protects the cable from solar radiation, esp. during prolonged open-air storage, and is made by moulding from reticulated or non-reticulated polyethylene charged with carbon black. <IMAGE>
