In a cooling system for continuously extruded plastics or rubber the material concerned is fed in to a cooling channel which receives cooling water. The length of the system is divided into parts, each part has jets to spray cooling water and these are fed from separate closed circuit supplies. The figure shows an example of one individual length of the system, with its own cold water tank (2), pump (3) and heat exchanger (4). It has its cooling path (5) which is interrupted at one point (6) so that the extrusion is exposed here, and a sensor (7) can measure the surface temp. of the extrusion. The whole length is enclosed, and the extrusion passes along a suitable guide (8) e.g. rollers, a profiled section, plate etc.. The channel concerned (5) is adjustable in height (9,10). The pump (3) draws water through the pipe (11) and feeds it to spray jets which are positioned round the guide (8) and the moving extrusion. The water drains off at the break (6), flows through a coarse filter (13), the heat exchanger (4) and a fine filter (14) before entering the main tank (2) again. ADVANTAGE - The system is efficient but saves energy and has a low consumption of cooling water. |
