The insert consists of a tubular section (11) which includes a pair of corners such that it defines a lateral offset when inserted between the main section of the clarinet body (3) and its mouthpiece (2). The interior of the insert has inlet (112), intermediate (111) and outlet (113) portions. The inlet and outlet portions are circular in cross-section and parallel in axis, and the intermediate portion defines an equal angle with the axis of each of the other two portions. The cross-section of the intermediate portion is smaller in area than the other two portions, and may be reduced further by inserts (114) defining a diaphragm or throat.
