The heater has a heating element (1) made of carbon or ceramic. The element is supplied with electricity. A working fluid (3) is circulated over the element and carries heat away to be circulated to radiators to provide heating of rooms and other spaces. The heat output can be increased by fitting several carbon or ceramic elements into the heat transfer region, with the working fluid circulating faster to carry away the extra heat generated. The heating elements can be electrically in series or parallel, and can operate from alternating or direct current. Manual and automatic controls can be fitted to regulate flow of current to produce the required temperature.
