Ion generator in a gaseous medium including at least one emitting needle (Ag) arranged in a set of plates (P2, P4, P5) connected to a high voltage electrical source (A1) and an electron-producing insulating plate. The invention is characterized in that the needle (Ag) comprises a coaxial sheath (Gb) of a high resistivity, low loss and relatively high permittivity dielectrical material, extended by a first conical proximal first section (Cp) of the same material, revealing the emitting needle end, and itself extended by an open conical distal structure (Cd) of the same material as that of the sheath. The distal structure (Cd) is extended by a plate (Pi) of the same material as that of the sheath and forms, together with the distal conical structure (Cd), the electron-producing plate. The extension plate (Pi) is secured beneath a plate (P6) of a very low electrically conducting material, forming a portion of the outer generator housing. The ion generator of the invention is suitable for depolluting and decontaminating various facilities and protecting sensitive locations from static charges.
