An apparatus (18) for measuring the dimensions of an object is disclosed. Light sources (26) are arranged on one side of a conveyor (4) which carries the object, and detectors (32) are on the other side of the conveyor (4). Between the light sources (26) and the detectors (32) are one or more rotating drums (22) parallel to the dimension to be measured with holes (30) therethrough arranged in a spiral pattern. As the drum (22) rotates the light from the light sources (26) are scanned.
