A cutter blade and a machine for cutting or slicing flat materials such as leather, is claimed. A drive device (56) causes the cutter blade to move relative to the workpiece. Novelty is that the cutter blade (10) is a razor-thin band housed in a cassette (10) similar to that of a printer ribbon; the working length of the cutter is clamped, and the drive device (56) causes the clamped length of the cutter blade to reciprocate (57) with respect to the workpiece.
