Gear=cutting hob design with cermet inserts

Identically press-formed cutting teeth (28), notably at least two abutted in multiple tooth design and arranged in series, are fitted to the body of the hob (12) so their join (32) lies in the bottom part of the tooth profile. The axial overlap of the end teeth resulting from their helical arrangement is machined off. The teeth forming the insert are drilled out (34) axially right the way through. The hob has supporting teeth (20) equi-spaced all round it as well as a seating surface which is directed in the working rotation sense so the rear faces of the teeth can be thrust against this surface during hobbing. Hob body, fixing disc and clamping teeth are all made of high-speed tool steel, and the hob is formed with integrated clamping mandrels for the drive and abutment sides of the machine.
