The airbag unit has at least one gas generator (11), a generator carrier (12), a folded gasbag (13) and a pot-shaped cover (14), the bottom (15) of which can be broken by the expanding gasbag. The cover edge zone (16) facing away from the bottom is connected to the generator carrier. The aperture zone (18) round the aperture (17) of the generator is fixed and sealed to the generator carrier by a gastight joint. It is stretched between the internal wall (19) of the cover edge zone and a wall part (20) of the generator carrier which runs roughly parallel to the internal wall (19).
