Floor covering mfg. process and floor covering element

In a process for mfg. a floor and/or wall covering element individual tiles (12) are arranged face down on an underlayer with their positions determined by the pattern on the decorative face side (18) and a carrier layer (16) is applied to the upward facing rear face (19). A floor/wall covering element (11) is claimed which has a facing layer of synthetic resin mixed with coloured sand and/or stone particles. Pref. the underlayer is used only once and consists of film, paper or cardboard folded to form a mould (22). Joints (13) between adjacent tiles (12) are covered over, pref. with an adhesive strip (21), before the carrier layer (16) is applied to the rear face (19) of the tiles (12). After hardening the carrier layer (16) the floor covering element (11) is turned over, demoulded and the joints (13) filled. In an alternative process the face side of the element is cast onto a smooth surface or into a mould with a smooth insert. Several successive layers may be cast. The rear face of the element is created by scraping off the final layer, e.g., until level with mould upper edge.
