The component has respective contact electrodes (4,5) provided at the opposing major surfaces (2,3) of the component body (1). The contact electrodes cover the larger part of each major surface, the remaining free areas of each major surface encapsulated in glass (7). In the case of a varistor, the component body may be cylindrical, with the contact electrodes applied to the opposing end faces, with the intermediate mantle surface and the remaining parts of each end face encapsulated in glass.
