A spring (7) to regulate the plectrum tooth ensures that the tooth retracts approx. 2.5 mm off the vibrating reed directly after plucking. There is a plectrum lever for each tuning reed, and the lug at the end of each long lever engages a music card (5) with slots (6) depending on the strip speed. The drive draws the lever (2) and its lug (4) down off the fixed end of the strip slot so the tooth at the shorter end can pluck the reed. The lug is smoothly curved on its right-hand side for easier entry into the slot (6) only to be forced down against the spring (8) so as to pivot and raise the end tooth to pluck the reed for sound, the damper (9) now raised clear so the reed can vibrate. When the next slot is engaged by the lug (4), the short end of the plectrum is depressed to retract the tooth off the reed etc.
