A pro-capture circuit (30) is used in a phase locked loop (100) having a normal operating range in which an output signal (RC) of the phase locked loop varies between a minimum normal value (V2) and a maximum normal value (VI). The pro-capture circuit (30) includes circuitry (CMPR1 and CMPR2) for sensing when the output signal is outside the normal operating range and circuitry (37 and SW) for forcing the output signal to reenter the normal operating range.
