The probe or suction head used to remove the excavated ground has a central conveying channel (12). The probe head (4') forms an opening (19) fitted out with a ring of nozzles (20) to set up pressure jets (21) surrounding the head opening (19). The nozzle ring is set back from the open end of the suction channel (12), using an outer probe designed as an outer circular tube and an inner non-circular, eg. square tube acting as a conveying channel. Thus compressed air channels are produced between the exterior of the inner tube and interior of the outer circular tube. The probe channel (12) is connected to the vacuum-producing entry of a conveying nozzle which delivers into the ground-gathering container. The probe unit is lowered vertically alongside the wall so the nozzles break up the ground for passing to the inbuilt container via the channel (12).
