In a semi-conductor device comprising a semi-conductive member, which has a rectifying contact formed in or on it and is housed in a gas-tight envelope through the walls of which electric conductors extend and are sealed, the space in the envelope is divided into at least two parts. One of these parts is adjacent a seal of the conductors and is evacuated or occupied by a material with higher specific resistance to heat flow than the material occupying the second part which completely encloses the semi-conductor member. The transistor of Fig. 1 comprises a semiconductor body with alloyed electrodes, immersed in a viscous heat conducting medium 5, e.g. polymethyl siloxane, in glass tube 1. The lid through which connecting conductors 3 are sealed is fused to the tube by heating, while the tube is held by cooling clamps 6. A heat-conducting powder, e.g. quartz or copper or aluminium may be used instead of a viscous filler the space above it being filled with heat insulating material, e.g. aluminium oxide or asbestos. Where copper or aluminium is used the semi-conductor body and parts of the conductors passing through it are given a coating of insulation. Instead of a glass tube a metal tube may be used with a glass cover through which the conductors are sealed, sealed to it, e.g. by use of a low-melting enamel. In the Fig. 3 and Fig. 4 (not shown), arrangement comprising a single and double diode respectively the semi-conductor bodies 12 and conductors 3 are inserted through the narrowed end of a tube, a viscous filler is introduced around the bodies by syringe and then the ends are sealed to the conductors. The bodies may in addition be embedded in a hardening filler, e.g. polystyrene, polyisobutylene or that sold under the Registered Trade Mark " Araldite," before insertion in the tube.
