The method involves the in-situ re-planing to a controlled shape of the nozzle face (3) of a plastics extruder aperture plate (1) by a planer (10). The extruder plate is exposed whilst still attached to the extruder. The planer is positioned so that the nozzle face can then be re-planed to the desired profile. The planer is rotated by the shaft (52) of an external motor (31). An eccentric (18) on the shaft and toothed wheel (29) on the honing head causes the honing head (11) to oscillate whilst rotating in contact with the nozzle face.
