<p>A composition for producing water-repellant dressings on textiles or paper comprises (1) a natural wax or paraffin wax or a waxy ester of a higher monocarboxylic acid and a higher mono-or di-hydric alcohol; (2) a condensation product obtained by heating under practically anhydrous conditions (a) a formaldehyde condensation product of an amino-1 : 3 : 5-triazine containing at least two NH2-groups which is free from carbon chains containing 7 or more carbon atoms and in which at least one oxymethyl group for every -NH2 group of the aminotriazine is etherified with an alcohol containing at most 4 carbon atoms, with (b) a partial ester of a polyhydric aliphatic alcohol with a saturated aliphatic monocarboxylic acid containing at least 12 carbon atoms or a partial ether of a polyhydric alcohol with a monohydric alcohol containing at least 12 carbon atoms; and (3) a hardening agent. The aminotriazine condensation product is waxy, dissolves in esters, ketones and hydrocarbons and is compatible with fatty oils, colophony, colophony-phenol resins, phenol-formaldehyde resins, maleic acid esters, heat-treated copals, alkyds, styrolized oils, urea and aminotriazine resins, vinyl resins and epoxide resins. To impregnate the textile or paper the composition is dissolved in an organic solvent (e.g. carbon tetrachloride, trichlorethylene, orthodichlorobenzene, chlorobenzene 1,2-dichlorethane, benzene, toluene, xylene or benzine) or is emulsified in aqueous medium. The composition may also contain a water-soluble aluminium salt (e.g. the formate, acetate or sulphate), a zirconium salt, hydrated zirconium dioxide, a ternary aminotriazine condensation product as disclosed in Specification 748,016 or a diluent (e.g. ethyl alcohol or isopropyl alcohol). Examples disclose water-proofing compositions comprising (1) and (2) an aqueous emulsion containing the reaction product of a highly methylated methylol melamine and glycerine distearic acid ester (or glycerine dioctadecyl ether), paraffin wax, an acetic acid salt of a ternary condensation product of methylated methylol melamine and tri-ethanolamine and stearic acid, ammonium chloride, acetic acid and, if desired, isopropyl alcohol; (3) a solution in carbon tetrachloride of the reaction product of highly methylated methylol melamine and glycerine distearic acid ester (or glycerine octadecyl ether), paraffin wax, the ternary aminotriazine condensation product of Examples 1 and 2, monochloroacetic acid and ethanol.</p> |
