PURPOSE:To obtain the subject new compound, having a woody or an ambery aroma and flavor characteristics, excellent in persistence of the characteristics and useful for foods such as beverages or favorite foods or as a compounding material for cosmetics such as a cosmetic base. CONSTITUTION:The optically active 13-alkoxy-8alpha, 13- epoxy-14,15,16-trinorlabdanes of formula I (R is a 1-4C alkyl; the wavy line indicates that the compounds are the cis- or trans-isomer), e.g. 13-methoxy-8alpha,13- epoxy-14,15,16-trinorlabdane. The compounds of formula I are readily obtained by reacting a compound of formula II with a compound of the formula ROH (preferably a lower alcohol) in the presence of an acidic catalyst. Furthermore, the reaction is preferably carried out at a reactional temperature within the range of about 0-20 deg.C for about 0.1-2hr. The alcohol of the formula ROH is preferably used in an amount of about 1.2-2 mol based on 1mol compound of formula II. |
