Class 73 In a "top-strapping" labelling machine as described in Specification 744,318 in which a detector 89 Fig. 7 in the feed line of the bottles 5, in the absence of a bottle, prevents the upward movement of the label stack 30 and thus contact with the suction head 16 for withdrawal of a label, the detector 89 also controls the rocking movement of the gumming roller 72 towards contact with a label on the suction head 16. This control is effected by means of a rubber diaphragm 99, one side of which is connected to the suction line of the head 16, a spindle 108 secured to the diaphragm actuating a solenoid 136 to rock the gumming roller 72 into label contacting position under the influence of the suction applied to the diaphragm 99 when a label has been withdrawn by the head 16. With an uninterrupted bottle feed, a label withdrawn from the stack 30 by the suction head 16 closes the suction apertures therein and a sufficient degree of suction is reached in the suction line to actuate the diaphragm whereupon the gumming roller 72 is rocked into label contacting position; on interruption of the bottle feed, the operation of the detector 89 prevents the suction head 16 from withdrawing a label from the stack, the suction apertures in the head remain uncovered and the suction is not sufficient to actuate the diaphragm. Consequently the gumming roller 72 is not rocked and gum is not applied to the uncovered face of the head 16. The diaphragm is loaded by a spring 118 which can be adjusted by a nut 116 so that the suction in the space 105 required to depress the diaphragm is greater than the suction available when no label is held by the head 16. On actuation of the diaphragm the upper end 112 of the spindle 108 deflects the spring arm 113 of the micro switch 114 which closes a circuit 135 in which the solenoid 136 is connected. The solenoid 136 pulls a link 137 connecting it to a lever projection 138 depending from a lever bracket 74 and rocks the bracket to swing the roller 72 from the inoperative position up to the head 16. A spring 139 acting on the link 137 tends to rock the' roller 72 into the inoperative position. Absence of a bottle 5 causes the detector 89 to close a circuit 90 in which a solenoid 91 is connected. This solenoid pulls on a slide 94 Fig. 6. which in turn prevents the outward radial movement of a cam 59 which controls the vertical movements of the label stack 30. The cam 59 is thus held out of the path of a follower roller 60 rigid with the stack 30, the stack is not lifted and no label extracted. |
